How to remove gel nails at home?

Tools Needed:

  • Acetone (100% pure for best results)
  • Nail file (preferably 180-grit)
  • Aluminum foil or nail clips
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • Cuticle pusher or orangewood stick
  • Buffer
  • Cuticle oil or hand cream

Steps:

  1. File the Top Layer
Use a nail file to gently file off the shiny topcoat of the gel. This helps the acetone penetrate the gel more effectively.

  2. Soak Cotton in Acetone
Saturate a cotton ball or pad with acetone. Avoid oversoaking to minimize mess.

  3. Wrap Nails with Foil or Clips
Place the acetone-soaked cotton ball on your nail and wrap it tightly with aluminum foil. Alternatively, use nail clips to secure it. Repeat for all nails.

  4. Wait 10-15 Minutes
Allow the acetone to break down the gel. Check one nail after 10 minutes—if the gel appears soft and flaky, it’s ready. If not, rewrap and wait a few more minutes.

  5. Gently Push Off Gel
Use a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick to gently push off the loosened gel. Avoid scraping forcefully to protect your natural nail.

  6. Buff Remaining Residue
Use a nail buffer to smooth out any leftover gel. Be gentle to avoid thinning your nails.

  7. Hydrate and Nourish
Wash your hands, apply cuticle oil, and follow with a rich hand cream to restore moisture.

Tips:

  • Work in a well-ventilated area to minimize acetone fumes.
  • Avoid peeling or picking at the gel to prevent nail damage.
  • If the gel is stubborn, repeat the soaking process rather than forcing it off.
