How do fake nails stay on?

Fake nails stay on through different adhesion methods depending on the type of fake nail you’re using. Here’s how the various types adhere to your natural nails:
1. Press-On Nails
- Adhesive Tabs: Some press-on nails come with pre-applied adhesive tabs on the back of the nail. You simply peel off the protective layer and press the nail onto your natural nail.
- Nail Glue: Other press-ons require a small amount of nail glue to be applied to either the fake nail or your natural nail before pressing the two together.
2. Acrylic Nails
- Nail Glue: Acrylic nails start with applying a plastic tip to the natural nail using nail glue. Then, an acrylic mixture (liquid monomer and powder polymer) is applied over the tip and natural nail, hardening to form a strong bond that lasts for several weeks.
- Bonding Powder: Some systems use a bonding powder applied directly onto the glue to add extra strength to the adhesive.
3. Gel Nails
- Base Coat & Gel Polish: Gel nails are applied by first prepping the natural nail and then applying a base coat. Gel polish or gel extension material is then layered on, each layer being cured under a UV or LED lamp. This curing process hardens the gel and bonds it to the natural nail.
- Builder Gel: For gel extensions, a thicker “builder gel” is applied to add length, which is also cured under the lamp.
4. Dip Powder Nails
- Base Coat & Powder: A base coat is applied to the natural nail, and the nail is then dipped into a colored powder. The process is repeated until the desired thickness is achieved. An activator liquid is then applied to harden the powder, forming a durable bond.
5. Silk Wraps
- Adhesive Resin: A thin piece of silk or other fabric is placed over the natural nail or an extension. An adhesive resin is then applied over the fabric to hold it in place, followed by a sealant to create a smooth, durable surface.
6. Nail Tips
- Nail Glue: Nail tips are attached to the natural nail using nail glue. Once in place, they are typically covered with acrylic, gel, or dip powder to blend the tip seamlessly with the natural nail and add strength.
The key to making any fake nails stay on longer is proper nail preparation. This includes cleaning the natural nail, pushing back the cuticles, buffing the nail surface lightly to create a rough texture for better adhesion, and avoiding contact with water or oils immediately before application.
